Authors retrospectively analized ultrasonographic findings of 101 cases of breast lesion which were proved histopathologically or clinically at Chung Nam National University Hospital from January 1993 to September 1993.
@ES The results were as follows :
@EN 1. Of all 101 cases, there were 30 fibroadenomas, 24 fibrocystic disease, 3 lipomas, 1 intraductal papilloma, and 43 carcinomas.
2. Ultrasonography provided accurate information for the size, location, internal structures and relationship between lesion and adjacent structure ; Findings suggesting benignancy were smooth contour, round or oval shape, homogeneously
echolucent
internal echo, echogenic boundary echo, and posterior enhancement ; Findings suggesting malignancy were irregular and lobulated shape, inhomogeneous and mixed internal echo, and pectoral muscle invasion ; Both benign & malignant diseases most
commonly
occur in upper outer quadrant of breast.
3. Ultrasonography can be used as an adjunctive imaging modality to film mammography for better detection of breast cancer and useful for guiding fine needle aspiration biopses.
